Notes:

Matthew Benjamin Bowey served with the Royal Artillery signing up on the 14th March 1889 for 7 years with colors and 5 in the reserve.  His rank through out the period is listed as a ‘driver’.  In 1896 he was transferred to the reserve whereupon his character was assessed as “very good”.  Matthew was recalled to service in 1899 because of the Bore War and participated in the ‘South African’ campaign between 3rd Jan 1900 and 1st April 1902.

At the age of 46 Matthew undertook a further ‘short service’ just after the Great War, enlisting with the Royal Engineers on 12th June 1919.  He was posted overseas once again in the rank of ‘Driver’.  However, and was discharged under para. 392 XVI of the King’s Regulations as he was no longer fit for War Service on 29th Jan 1920 due to Myalgia or muscle pain.

Matthew’s army files tell us that he was a short man of only 5ft 4inches and had blue eyes and brown hair.
