Note: George Gilpin seems to have
been something of the proverbial Gentleman Farmer. His will deals with the
distribution of his deceased wife’s gold rings between his surviving
daughters Alice Mitchel, Sarah Roberts and Winifryd Hall.
Winifryd also receives £20 (worth
about £2052 today). The sum
of one shilling left to Alice and Sarah probably indicates that they had
already received a significant settlements upon
their marriages. The remainder of
George’s estate is left to his ‘well beloved son’
George. We believe this same
estate is the property in Woughton on the Green
which George Jnr in turn leaves to his grandson and
namesake when he passes on in Newport Pagnell in 1778. Although we do not yet know exactly
which property in Woughton was owned by George, in
1741 he was renting an Estate with a Farm House there, owned at that time by
Thomas Bowery, an apothecary from Newport Pagnell. In his life time George
seems to have served in the unpaid office of Petty constable for the Parish
of Woughton on the Green and was Church warden at
St Mary’s. Although, our research is
not yet complete we believe that this family may be part of the wider
influential Gilpin or Kilpin clan who owned significant amounts of Property
in North Bucks including for a time the manor at Walton which now forms part
of the Open University campus.. |
